BirdFeeder

Players take on the role of a bird attempting to feed other birds in the zoo while trying to escape the evil zookeeper. The gameplay is first-person, arcade/"high score" based.

Jenna Perkin and I co-developed BirdFeeder to further our knowledge of blueprint coding in Unreal Engine 4, including asset importation and working with custom animations.

I created a modular level design kit in Blender, allowing for easy transformation of the level layout when transitioning from the block-out phase. All assets were modeled in Blender and textured using Photoshop.

Our initial game concept of having a bird character who would take food for other birds greatly shaped the art direction taken for the final game. In order to solve any confusion between what birds would get which food, I began to explore changing the shape of the birds to match their fruit counterpart. Players are able to feed the birds whichever fruit they have, but will earn more points by matching the fruit to the specific bird. To do this, I built on the idea of "you are what you eat"- so square birds would eat square fruit. This solved an accessibility concern with relying too much on color-matching.
